Abstract

University-Industry Collaboration (UIC) plays a crucial role in producing highly skilled and productive graduates who are well-equipped to meet the evolving needs of the industry. These collaborations not only enhance the employability of graduates but also contribute significantly to addressing innovation-market failures. By bridging the gap between academic research and industrial application, UIC enables the realisation of the full societal benefits of Research and Development (R&D) investments. Universities, often regarded as “engines of growth,” generate both human capital and research outputs that drive innovation, particularly in knowledge-intensive and technology-driven sectors. This article reviews existing literature and documentation to provide a comprehensive overview of how universities and businesses collaborate. It explores the importance of aligning academic programmes and research agendas with industry’s demands and highlights various models of UIC implementation across different countries. Furthermore, the article identifies best practices from successful collaborations that can be adapted by developing nations to stimulate economic development and foster sustainable innovation ecosystems.
