Abstract

This case study examines Sikkim’s journey towards sustainability and it’s economic implications. Sikkim is situated in the Himalayas, well-known for its natural beauty and rich cultural diversity. In recent years, Sikkim has emerged as a leader in sustainable initiatives aimed to protect the environment while promoting economic growth. Key initiatives consist of organic farming, forest conservation, renewable energy development, efficient waste management and eco-tourism promotion. Sikkim’s transition to organic farming has not only improved soil health and biodiversity but also boosted farmers’ incomes through premium priced organic produce. Strict forest conservation policies have maintained ecological balance, supported agriculture and increased tourism revenue. The state’s focus on renewable energy, particularly hydropower and solar energy has reduced dependency on fossil fuels, lowered energy costs and created employment in green industries. Effective waste management practices, including plastic ban and recycling programs, have minimised environmental impact and boosted local economies. Sikkim’s eco-tourism initiatives have attracted global visitors, generating revenue and employment while securing cultural heritage. In light of these achievements, Sikkim faces challenges such as balancing development with conservation and reducing climate change impacts. Opportunities lie in further promoting sustainable agriculture, expanding renewable energy capacities, strengthening waste management infrastructure and enhancing climate resilience. Sikkim’s commitment to sustainability not only secures a fortunate future for their people but also sets an impressive example for global sustainable development efforts.
