Abstract

Obtaining written information is a major difficulty for the 285 million people worldwide who are affected by vision impairment. In order to solve this problem, our initiative introduces a low-cost smart reader made especially for people who are blind or visually handicapped. In contrast to conventional approaches that could be unaffordable, our system makes use of the accessibility and adaptability of ESP8266 Microcontroller to offer a solution that is both affordable and practical. ESP8266 Microcontroller, which is well-known for being inexpensive and user-friendly, forms the core of our smart reader system. Through the integration of ESP8266 Microcontroller boards with diverse peripherals like cameras and audio output devices, we have created a platform that can identify written text and translate it into speech instantly. Our smart reader’s primary function is centered on optical character recognition (OCR) technology. The device takes pictures of printed text using a camera module, and the ESP8266 Microcontroller processes the photos. Python and other ESP8266 Microcontroller-compatible programming languages are used to create complex algorithms that analyze and transform the collected text into a format that is readable by machines. Our smart reader’s speech output feature is one of its main selling points since it allows those with visual impairments to access printed material without the help of a visual aid. Upon text recognition, ESP8266 Microcontroller employs text-to-speech (TTS) technology to produce appropriate speech output, enabling users to hear the printed material’s contents in real-time. Through the utilization of ESP8266 Microcontroller as the primary component of our smart reader, we have effectively created an affordable solution that enables visually impaired individuals to freely access printed material. By bridging the gap between the visually challenged community and the enormous world with written literature, this innovation not only improves accessibility but also foster inclusivity.
