Abstract
This research delves into the various challenges hindering the development of sustainable rural tourism, focusing on economic, infrastructural, environmental, socio-cultural, and marketing issues. The study’s primary objectives are to identify these key challenges, evaluate their impacts on sustainable tourism practices, and propose strategic solutions. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were gathered through structured questionnaires and analyzed using chi-square tests, descriptive statistics, and thematic analysis. The Wayanad district in Kerala, India, is used as a case to exemplify these challenges and potential interventions. The findings highlight significant obstacles, including insufficient financial support, inadequate infrastructure, environmental degradation, socio-cultural barriers, and ineffective marketing strategies. The proposed strategic solutions include enhancing financial mechanisms, improving infrastructure, adopting conservation practices, promoting community involvement, and developing effective marketing strategies. These insights provide a comprehensive framework for promoting sustainable rural tourism in other similar regions, helping to benefit local communities while preserving cultural and natural heritage. The study’s contributions align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8, 11, and 12, which emphasize decent work and economic growth, sustainable communities, and responsible consumption and production. The broader implications suggest that these interventions can be adapted and applied to similar regions globally, thereby enhancing the sustainability and viability of rural tourism.
