Abstract

An integral component of Indias game changer on vocational education will be its emphasis on providing training to workers in the informal sector. These workers need to be certified and brought into the mainstream of jobs. Little is known about their proficiency in the skills in which they are employed. A pilot study was undertaken with the objective of assessing the skill gaps to enable the skill development agencies to bridge this gap. The study was carried out in five trades of Motor Mechanic, Mason, Plumber, TV repair and Carpenter. This paper reports the main findings of the study.
