Abstract
Even in the twenty first century,
a significant number of women
are abused in every corner of the
globe. Both developed and developing
countries are on the
same boat regarding the treatment
of their women. In India, women
are still treated as commodities.
Youth unemployment, poverty in
general, use of drugs, dowry and
economic dependence of women
are found to be associated with
the abuse of women and domestic
violence. The consequences of
abuse undermine womens freedom
and human rights and it becomes
the victims nightmare
throughout her life. Education,
economic independence of
women and exemplary/quick
punishment by the judicial system
may bring positive change in the
minds of people and society at
large.
