Abstract

The relationships between transformational leadership, followers self-concept, and followers empowerment were studied using a sample of 113 employees of a network marketing organization in southern India that employs only women. It was hypothesized that transformational leadership is positively related to followers empowerment and this relationship is mediated by followers’ social identity. Results indicate that transformational leadership is positively related to both personal and social identity of followers. All four factors of followers’ psychological empowerment are positively related to transformational leadership and to followers personal and social identity. In addition, the relationship between transformational leadership and follower empowerment is mediated by followers social identity.
