Abstract
The gruesome murder of a Chennai school teacher
by a fifteen-year old student notwithstanding the
detrimental comments written by her in his report
card is a wake-up call to the parents and the teaching
fraternity to delve into the mental process of an
adolescent which has been an area of debate and
research for many years now. This article has come
in the wake of these changes in an average Indian
kid and the causes for the same. It would also
attempt to analyze whether Eriksons 5th stage of
cognitive development, adolescence, which denotes
the age group between 12 years and 18 years and
stands for role confusion, still has the same relevance
in the contemporary scenario. This sole objective of
the study would be further divided into simplified
hypotheses which ultimately would lead us to a better
understanding as to where these issues crop from.
