Abstract

Training and Development being one of the core techniques of Human Resource Development is the vital tool that contributes to the development of competencies in commercial banks. For carrying out a micro and in-depth study on training and employee development in commercial banks, sample of three main commercial banks have been selected from Dakshina Kannada District of Karnataka State, as the locale of the study. The banks selected are Karnataka Bank Ltd. in the private sector, Corporation Bank in the public sector both originating from Dakshina Kannada district and under new generation banking sector the sole ICICI bank branch that is functioning in Dakshina Kannada district were selected. This research aims to understand the attitude and work performance of employees of commercial banks after undergoing training. Apart from understanding the effectiveness of training programmes the study also aims to identify the magnitude of training needs of employees at different levels in commercial banks under study. The study has identified some flaws in the training system of these commercial banks suggests measures to improve the existing training practices in banks. Training should receive the maximum support from top management at the emotional level, in such a way that training system should be involved in solving strategic organizational problems
