A Bibliometric Analysis of Literature on Library 2.0 Research (1999-2013)

Abstract

Library 2.0 has become a marvellous mantra in the hands of information scientists in this Google age. The field could see a lot of literature in the recent past. This study aimed to describe current trends and areas of research using a bibliometric evaluation of the publication output associated with research on Library 2.0 during the 14-year period of 1999–2013. Data encompassing the period from 1999 to 2013 were extracted from the Web of Science online Citation Index database. We analyzed selected documents with Library 2.0 as a part of the title, abstract, or key words and reported the following parameters: trends of publication output, journal pattern, country of publication, prolific authorship, language, geographical and organizational productivity and citation status. The study reveals that: the annual number of articles on Library 2.0 grew after 2006, 2008 is the most productive year with 43 records (17.76 %) out of 242 records, followed by 42 (17.35 %) records in 2009, Surla D has emerged as the most prolific author with 7 records (2.83%) followed by Fourie I and Milosavlejvic B each with 5 records (2.06 %), United States of America tops the list with 62 records (25.62%) followed by England with 25 records (10.33 %) and Spain with 22 records (9.09 %), Articles are the most favoured research communication media of the researchers as they constitute 68.18 % of total records, 211 records were published in English Language grasping a lions share of 87.60 %, Both Univ Novi Sad and Victoria University, Wellington have contributed 7 records each with (2.89 %), The journal Electronic Library has 43 records (17.76 %) published therein followed by Program Electronic library and information system with 23 records (9.50 %) and Library Hi Tech with 21 records (8.67 %).
