Abstract
The study evaluates the performance of 50 most prolific Indian universities using Scopus database, which accounts for 20,41% share of all papers (68843) contributed by India during 1997-2011. The study analyses the contribution of the universities in twelve scientific fields,
participation of universities in national and international collaboration and mutual collaboration among them. The Indian universities witnessed an annual average growth rate of 14.43% during 2007-11. The international collaborative papers constitute 17.66% share in the total output of universities during 2007-11. The average citation per paper registered by Indian universities was 3.61, which varied from 1.47 to 6.93.
