Abstract
Considering progress made, the study analyzes the structure of life insurance industry in India and the competition among the life insurance companies. The preliminary observation provides that the opening of the gates to the global community, years ago, gave insurance sector and the economy, a positive push towards growth, and a decisive competitive edge. The entry of large number of private players changed the structure of the industry. An attempt is made to understand the impact of the changes. Concentration Index (CI) proposed by Baumol and Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) of concentration is used to analyze the state of competition. The major findings show a concentration decline and increased competition in the life insurance industry.
