Abstract

Agriculture plays a major role in India and continues to be central to all strategies of planned socio-economic development of the country. It contributes 27% to gross domestic product, sustains about 64% of livelihood, employs about 29% of the total work force, contributes 12% to the export and is a major source of income of the agrarian folk. Apart from this the major Indian industries like textile, sugar, jute etc., depend on the agriculture for their raw materials. In simple words, it is the life line of the Indian economy. The growth of agriculture depends mainly on the various inputs like factors of production and others and their effective utilization in the process of the agriculture activities. The factors of production include land, labour, capital and organization and other inputs are in the form of seeds, fertilizers, manures, pesticides, water, power, machinery and cattle. Among these inputs, water is the most important prerequisite for agricultural development. Water for agriculture is met by rain and rivers, canals and wells made available by means of bore wells and motor pumps. In India, agriculture continues to be a gamble with the monsoon. Vast areas in the country continue to be at the mercy of the monsoon. In certain areas where rains are not adequate or completely nil, there is a need for the construction of irrigation projects. So more importance is given by the government to the construction of major and minor irrigation projects during the plan periods because these irrigation projects help to utilize 40% of the utilizable water for the required irrigation. Now-a-days due to failure of monsoon the possibility of normal flow into irrigation canals has been almost exhausted. Thus, there is a necessity for a shift in the areas where there is no flow of irrigation to construction of minor irrigated works such as tanks and wells and installation of water lifting devices. The technology of lifting water is not new in our country. In olden days people used different devices to take water from the ground level. It includes buckets and pots, then they used horses and buffaloes and slowly moved to the use of pumps and motors, an invention of new technology. The invention of pumps is a great advantage in a country like India which is not a water served country particularly, in Tamilnadu, where the western and southern parts are mostly affected by this problem.
