Abstract

Water is considered as one of the most precious resources to be managed in order to maintain the ecological balance of earth. Irrigation consumes a major portion of water demand and hence due attention is needed for improving irrigation techniques and estimating actual demand of water for irrigation. The present paper describes several moisture measurement techniques, their limitations, proposes and justifies a solution of using wireless sensor networks in working out the exact water demand in controlled irrigation. It also highlights the major constraints of WSN for the proposed solution. Keywords: Irrigation, soil moisture measurement, wireless sensor networks.
