Abstract
Financial technology is shaping up to be a key and significant infrastructure for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), especially in India, where technologies such as Unified Payment Interface (UPI), digital lending, account aggregation, alternative credit scoring and online formalization are now connected to enterprise finance. The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of Fintech on MSME growth and provide financial support between the periods of 2020-2025 focusing on the case of India and to some extent globally. The type of this study is descriptive research and analysis. There is no reliance on primary source data as it has been proposed to be collected from structured questionnaires and interviews with MSME owners, fintech users, loan seekers and digital payment users, but the data used in this empirical study is verified secondary source data from the Ministry of MSME, Ministry of Finance/PIB, SIDBI-TransUnion CIBIL, RBI, World Bank and peer-reviewed literature. According to the analysis, the digital payment transactions have risen from 4,370.68 crore in 2020-21 to 16,443.02 crore in 2023-24 and 18,120.82 crore till January 2025 in 2024-25. MSME commercial credit exposure has increased from `19.3 lakh crore (March 2020) to `35.2 lakh crore (March 2025); the percentage of seriously delinquent segments also declined from 3.9% to 1.8% during the same period. Both the correlation results and regression show that there is significant positive relationship in-between volume of digital payment and payment value though enterprise level primary data cannot be claimed for causality. The paper finalises with the conclusion that even though fintech can contribute to formalisation of MSME, traceability of transactions, access to credit and efficiency of operations, it still needs digital literacy, protection of data, adaption of fair digital lending practices, and inclusion of micro enterprises beyond large urban markets, for its developmental impact.
