Abstract
This paper studies the transformation of the fast growth of Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms. Distribution and viewing practices of regional films in Kannada. The uniqueness of regional cinema in Karnataka. The Kannada film industry is concentrated. The role of OTT distribution in the sustainable growth of regional films is studied. Broadening access, audience base, and economic viability outside conventional theatrical systems. A mixed-method research design is used in this study. The quantitative and qualitative analyses were collected via a structured audience survey. Qualitative insights were generated using in-depth interviews. The filmmakers, distributors, and OTT platform people. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used to analyze the quantitative data, and the qualitative responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results reveal a significant growth of OTT platforms. The market of Kannada cinema is beyond geographical boundaries. They have increased audience engagement and provided an alternative source of revenue. The special advantage of small- and medium-budget movies. OTT distribution has also resulted in more diversity in stories being told. The diminishing significance of the box office. But challenges remain—from discoverability of content to revenue-sharing limitations. The dominance of large national and international platforms. This study suggests adopting a hybrid distribution strategy. That combines theatrical releases with digital streaming can support. Longterm sustainability of regional cinema. These findings offer strategic insights for filmmakers. The OTT platform managers and policymakers are strengthening. The digital ecosystem for regional film industries.
