Abstract
Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act
(MGNREGA) has been providing 100 days employment to the rural poor since coming into force in 2006. However, the progress of the implementation of this flagship scheme of the government has been ridden with several bottlenecks that prevented it from giving the desired results. Taking the case of Madhya Pradesh, which is one of the backward states in the country, this study, carried out in 2012, dwells into awareness levels, implementation status and the impact of the scheme on rural employment, agriculture, womens empowerment and local governance.
