Abstract
Majority of Indian workers are
part of the so-called informal
economy. Government of India
aims to improve the education
system for young Indians so that
they may have better chances to
enter the formal economy. Since
it is a long way until the Indian
economy will be able to absorb
the large number of school
leavers, it is also important to
target workers in the informal
economy and improve their living
conditions. It is essential to
understand how informal workers
currently learn. This paper
analyses these learning processes
by means of a case study
of a group of small-scale mechanics
in two semi-urban regions
in South India. The study
is based on qualitative interviews
with informal workers, and
seeks to bring out the perspective
of the mechanics themselves.
