JOHAR is an official publication of Department of Hotel Management & Catering Technology, BIT Ranchi Mesra. The Department was established in January-2003 and offers 4-year degree program in Hotel Management & Catering Technology in order to shape future hospitality professionals. The program is approved by the AICTE. The Department is determined to create a world-class center in hospitality education, with the technical assistance of experts and reputed personalities from the industry and academics. Within a short span of time from its inception, the dept. has achieved the position of being one of the most sought-after Institute of Hotel Management in India.

Department is equipped with training kitchens, housekeeping laboratory, front office laboratory, computer laboratory, and Internet center; state–of–the–art auditorium and conference center, and a world-class library which ensure practical training in a professional hotel environment. The department also have 34 room guesthouse for on-hand training of students.

Students are placed at various hotels of international repute like Taj, Oberoi, Leela, ITC, Marriot, Hyatt to name a few.

Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, a Deemed to be University was established in the year 1955 at Mesra, Ranchi, by the Philanthropist-Industrialist Mr. B M Birla with a vision to be recognized as a world-class learning institution for engineering and technology by providing the highest-quality academic programmes that foster student development and connect knowledge, practice, and outstanding scholarly research.

Over the last fifty years, the Institute has not just kept pace with the times; it has often taken a lead in introduction of programs in emerging areas. At present BIT, Mesra is a "Deemed to be University" under Sec. 3 of the U.G.C. Act 1956. The Institute today offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate as well as Doctoral level programmes in Engineering & Technology, Applied Sciences, Remote Sensing, Computer Applications, Information Science, Bio-Medical Instrumentation, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Business Management & Hotel Management & Catering Technology.
